Meet Bodey Blake

My oldest cousin had a baby boy this week, Bodey Blake. I got to go see them this weekend. Bodey has a 6-year old brother, Cole, and 4-year old sister, Jadyn. They are THE. CUTEST. KIDS. Pictured is Jadyn and cousin Joseph enjoying the new little boy.

My aunt and cousin went with me to see Bodey. My little cousin was very quiet as he sat in the backseat of my car. After watching me drive for a while, he finally spoke up. “Why do you keep moving that thing?” I smiled as I pondered how to explain a manual transmission to a seven year-old. I gave him some vague answer about how I had to use it to change gears so the car could go.

Reset

What do you do when you are feeling frustrated, having a hard day, or are just struggling with life itself? I have to constantly work at speaking truth to myself and think positively.

When I went to mom and dad’s a couple weeks ago, my brother was expressing frustration with a certain sister, and the words that have been running through my head the last few weeks came sprinting out of my mouth. “You’re gonna miss this, you’re gonna want this back. You’re gonna wish these days had never gone by so fast.” I felt tears coming, and wished I could somehow help him see what I did not at that age.

Savor. Enjoy. Appreciate. Cherish.

It’s gone so fast. I often find myself saying those lyrics over and over and I’m learning to enjoy the journey…the whole journey. I wish I had known then how much I should delight in every moment, even the ones that don’t seem delightful. I now cherish every phone call, every moment with my family. I’m learning how to enjoy this season of my journey. I don’t want to look back with regret in a few years.

So when the fire gets too hot, here are some other “stop, drop, and roll” phrases…or you could just call them reset phrases...

God is in control.
Everything happens for a reason.
This too shall pass.
Enjoy the journey.
God always sees the bigger picture.
This is my life, and I love it!
Enjoy your life while God works on your problems.
I WILL still love you, Lord.
God is still God.
Everyone inside my head, just take a seat!
Now is not forever.
Will it matter in 5 years?
If He brought you to it, He will bring you through it.
“Rest, I go before you.”
“Be still and know that I am God.”
Breathe in faith; breathe out fear.
Every test is a testimony, every mess is a message.
I am fine.
I will go through the valley if You want me to.
Ps. 27:4
Don’t expect so much from yourself; expect it from Me!
Where You lead me, I will follow. What You feed me, I will swallow.
“In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15)
Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

A Weekend in the Life of Lauren

Friday night I hung out with my seven year-old cousin. He might be too old for “babysitting” so we’ll just say I was keeping him company while his parents were gone. ;) Funny thing is, he kept me company, otherwise it would have been another quiet night at my house. I went over to his house so he could watch movies, and I worked on stuff while he did that and also fixed him a pb&j sandwich for dinner. Having someone to fix dinner for was so exciting; I must say that was probably the most fun I have ever had making pb&j! Pretty soon, I heard his little voice say “Lauren, do you wanna play a game with me?” He picked Monopoly which is probably one of my least favorite games, but who cares? I was going to play a game with someone lol! It turned out to be very educational for him (although the learning was cleverly disguised as fun) because he got to practice his reading and arithmetic. It was good for me too, since he enjoyed having me there and I felt like I was making memories. Those are the moments that really matter; I know that I will never regret spending quality time with people. (I discovered that one of my primary love languages is quality time which is why I think living alone has been so hard for me. I do get a lot of quality time with Jesus, though!)

Saturday was a very quiet day at home. I got to sleep in (which makes me happy), and I got a lot accomplished (which makes me happy as well). However, it was one of those very difficult days. I wish I could always be happy with my current circumstances, but there are days when my heart is just not there. I want to be there, but I am afraid I am not consistently walking in contentment. Thankfully, that always nudges me back to Jesus, so He and I get to talk about it a lot! :) It was a very lonely day, but there were two positive things that happened at the end of the day. First of all, my grandpa came over and helped me put up my towels racks and hooks in the bathroom. And then to finish the day, I got to go see a friend from Kansas City who happened to be in my town this weekend! That was probably the highlight of my whole week! Thirty minutes of hang-out time with a friend!

Sunday I visited another church. I found out about this one because my mom had heard that a lady she had known years ago is the wife of the pastor who had started this church, so mom wanted me to go see them. I looked them up online and discovered that the church was affiliated with PCA; I was raised Southern Baptist lol, and have never even been to a Presbyterian church, so I really had no idea what to expect. It was definitely different than what I am used to, but I was so glad I went because of the people I met while there. I introduced myself to the lady my mom knew and talked to her for a little bit, and then she introduced me to a girl my age named Tera. Tera is very sweet and we had a great conversation; she also introduced me to a lot of other people so my brain was working overtime trying to remember all the names. AHHH!! Then she asked me the dreaded question: “So where are you from?” I know that seems like a simple question, but tell me, how would someone who has moved 12 times and lived in 5 different states figure out where they are from? Please don’t ask me that question, people! I don’t have a hometown! So, I told her that I have moved around a lot and named off some of the places in Oklahoma that I have lived. When I mentioned one particular town, she said that she had some really good friends there. She told me their last name and I almost fell out of my chair. After seeing the look on my face she said, “You know them, don’t you?” I was like, “Tera, Emily was my best friend growing up. How do you know them??” I was completely floored. It was so exciting to make that connection. After getting Tera’s number and saying goodbye, I kept pondering this amazing link that we share (oh yeah, we were both at Emily’s wedding last year too!), and God whispered to me “Lauren, I know exactly where you are. You are not lost or floating around in space somewhere. You are right where I want you and I have plans laid out that you have yet to discover. Enjoy the adventure!” I was so grateful for that “hug” from God. After that fun morning, I took a trip to see my college cousin and hung out with her the rest of the day. We chatted while she worked on an art project (due the following morning), went for more last-minute supplies, grabbed a movie, and exclaimed over it together. It was wonderful.

Toilet Plumbing 101

Ah yes. Those of you who have lived long enough to have experienced the joys of solving maintenance problems at your home have probably been expecting me to write about this, especially given the recent change in my situation. For your enjoyment, I bring you “Bachelorette Battles Toilet.”

10:07pm – After I flushed the toilet, the water kept running and running and running. I knew it shouldn’t take that long to fill the tank, so after rolling my eyes and muttering under my breath, I went into my adult “fix-it” mode. I pulled the lid off the tank and saw that it was almost empty. How could that be when the water has been running all this time? I pushed down, pulled up, wiggled this, and tapped that. WHY ISN’T IT WORKING??? As I am hovering over my toilet in my pajamas, I am getting frustrated. I have to pay the utility bill for all this water that is flowing so freely into my sewer lines, thank you very much! Since visions of enormous utility bills and flooded bathrooms were dancing through my mind, and all of my – ahem – expert attempts to fix the situation were not working, I did the only other thing I knew to do.

DADDY!!!!!!

I’m guessing he was slightly alarmed to hear rushing water when he picked up the phone, but I explained the situation to him, and he gave me some suggestions on what to look for and possible solutions to the problem. When that still did not work, he told me to turn the water off at the valve. As I continued scrutinizing my predicament, he told me I could take a picture of it and send it to him and maybe he could see what was wrong. Otherwise, I could just go to bed and have someone come look at it in the morning. While he was talking, I noticed that the chain was tangled up, so I managed to get it untangled (did I mention that whenever I touch a toilet I feel like I am being invaded with germs?? GROSS!) After I hung up with Dad, I turned the water back on at the valve and once again tried filling the tank up with water. It took awhile, but it finally filled up and the water stopped running. Praise the Lord! TOILET CRISIS AVERTED!!

I called Dad and told him that I had hopefully fixed the problem. That felt good. :) So I went to bed thanking God that He had helped me fix the toilet, instead of being in a bad mood because of yet another problem. Now I not only have appreciation for a shower, but also for a toilet.

Bachelorette Battles Toilet…and Toilet LOSES!

If You Want Me To

This song by Ginny Owens is my heart's song right now:

The pathway is broken and the signs are unclear,
And I don’t know the reason why You brought me here.
But just because You love me the way that You do,
I’m gonna walk through the valley, if You want me to.

‘Cause I’m not who I was when I took my first step,
And I’m clinging to the promise You’re not through with me yet.
So if all of these trials bring me closer to You,
Then I will go through the fire, if You want me to.

It may not be the way I would have chosen,
When You lead me through a world that’s not my home.
But You never said it would be easy,
You only said I’d never go alone.

So when the whole world turns against me,
And I’m all by myself,
And I can’t hear you answer my cries for help,
I’ll remember the suffering Your love put You through.
And I will go through the valley, if You want me to.

A Shower is a Beautiful Thing

I got to take a shower in my house for the first time!!! It was pure bliss.

I have such a great appreciation for it now. I finished painting my tub, and did some touch up around the new shower, but still have some trim to paint.

Also this week, I visited another church, rearranged my bedroom furniture, put up curtains in my kitchen, moved a couch through a doorway into another room, unpacked boxes, saw THREE HUGE SPIDERS, got pest control to come out and spray, and baked banana bread, among work and other things. :) One day, I had to work 11 hours to help Grandma get the insurance report ready for the auditor who was coming the next morning.

Right now I am sitting at my mom and dad’s watching a football game with my brother. How I have missed them (my family, that is! I have missed football too though lol)! Last night, when I brought my bags in, my little sister said “It is so weird to see you in here with a suitcase!” I have to agree. It is very strange, but it is so nice to be here with them. I will always enjoy coming to visit at mom and dad’s.

I went shopping today to get stuff for my bathroom, so it will look cute now and I will have soft, cushy rugs to sink my feet into! Yay!

Be sure to catch the next episode of The Bachelorette to find out how Lauren will get area rugs into her car and then back out of her car and into her house! ;P
